And it’s a female singer who might not be an idol, but is a smash.

Katharine McPhee, the recording artist who finished second on the fifth season of FOX-TV’s “American Idol” and now stars on the hit NBC-TV series “Smash,” will perform at 8 p.m. Oct. 22.

Tickets to the concert, at $75 and $150 including a post-performance dessert reception, will go on sale to the public July 19.

Tickets are on sale now for the gala, which includes a cocktail reception, dinner, preferred concert seating and a post-performance dessert reception. Tickets are $550. Call Linda Schmoyer at 610-758-5071 or email gala2012@lehigh.edu.

McPhee gained notice when she finished second to “American Idol’ winner Taylor Hicks in 2006. Then her debut single, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny,” became the second-highest single of 2006 and the best chart debut for a female artist in two years.

Her self-titled debut album hit No. 2 on the charts, was certified gold and produced the Top 30 single “Over It.” In 2007, she headlined Allentown’s Mayfair festival.

Her second album, 2010′s “Unbroken,” also hit Top 30, and a Christmas album that same year, “Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You,” hit No. 11 on the holiday charts and produced a Top 20 adult contemporary single, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” featuring jazz trumpeter Chris Botti.

McPhee is scheduled to release a new disc this year.

She has had similar success in acting. On “Smash,” a drama revolving around the creation of a new Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, McPhee plays Karen Cartwright, one of the lead roles. The series debuted in February and has been renewed for a second season.

McPhee also has had roles on the television shows “CSI: NY,” “Community” and “Family Guy” and was in the 2008 movie “The House Bunny.” She was featured on two hit PBS specials, “Foster and Friends” and “Chris Botti in Boston.”

Funds raised at Gala2012 support Zoellner Arts Center by bridging the gap between ticket revenues and the costs of presenting artists, community outreach and educational programs.

Zoellner made the announcement this afternoon. In the past, the Gala events have featured Tony Bennett, Yo-Yo Ma and others.

The artist and star of NBC’s show “Smash” will perform 8 p.m. Oct. 20.

Tickets cost $550 for a cocktail reception, dinner, preferred concert seating and a post-performance dessert reception. Tickets for the Gala Evening package are on sale now.

Concert-only tickets will go on sale July 19 to the public. Tickets cost $150, $75 and include the post-performance dessert reception.

For anyone who sees her career and wants to follow in her footsteps, “You have to love it! You have to even love the lows,” McPhee advised in a recent interview with CNN.

“Just like any career, life is hard and there are challenges, especially with this business,” she went on. “There’s a lot of hoops to jump through and hills and valleys, [but] it’s really rewarding when it’s sweet.”

It’s that kind of outlook that undoubtedly helps her focus as she sets her sights on future goals.

“Where do I see myself in three years time? I hope I’m still working,” she joked before listing a few aspirations. “Maybe [I’ll have] a couple of movies under my belt, [or] maybe even going on Broadway!”

McPhee also has a particular career high – and it just happens to involve Alicia Keys and the former President Bill Clinton. Check out the video above to find out what happened.

Now that Rebecca Duvall (Uma Thurman) is out of the picture, “Bombshell” needs a new Marilyn Monroe on the Season 1 finale of NBC’s “Smash.” But will it be understudy Karen (Katharine McPhee) or more-experienced Ivy (Megan Hilty)?

Viewers will definitely have an answer by the end of Monday’s (May 14) finale — along with loads of questions about some explosive cliffhangers — but Zap2it can at least reveal that both women get dolled up in their Marilyn best for the episode, as seen in these exclusive behind-the-scenes photos.

Viewers will find out who replaces Rebecca Duvall (Uma Thurman) on Monday’s (May 14) Season 1 “Smash” finale, but in the meantime, NBC has both of the potential Marilyn Monroes — Katharine McPhee, who plays Karen, and Megan Hilty, who plays Ivy — letting us in on what real-life Broadway roles they’d like to tackle.

“There’s two,” says Hilty, who’s already played Glenda in “Wicked” and Doralee in the short-lived “9 to 5.” “I want to be Mrs. Lovett in ‘Sweeney Todd,’ and I want to be the Witch in ‘Into the Woods.’”

McPhee, however, is more interested in an original production.

“It has to be written,” she says. “Hopefully someone out there is writing a brilliant show I can be a part of in the future.”
